Pokemon Go (PMGO) by Niantic Labs made a big hit when it is first released, just like its predecessor "Ingress", another game applying AR technology. Ingress also has a LBS system and similar features like real-time interaction or hallroad battle, contributing in the game’s success.
Still, pros and cons, "Ingress" is nothing near the PMGO worldwide fever after appeared on “Android shelf” in 2013. The game’s players are mostly college students because of its trendy designs and communication features like friend and sprout. In compare with PMGO, "Ingress" delivers a good strange and different in the category of AR game. Still, one major weakness of the game is the lack off the interaction between the virtual world created by AR and the real world. In PMGO, players can actually “see” the magical creatures in the real life through the phone’s camera and screen.
In fact, the whole "Ingress" was based on LBS system rather than AR. In simple term, the game tracking your position via Google maps and GPS and add it to the game map, which is also the world map. As you are moving in the real world, your character in the game also change its location. Still, the biggest difference between "Ingress" and PMGO is that PMGO provides visual experience to increase the sense of reality through AR.
The success of PMGO is followed by a number of similar games such as "Catchmon" from Korea and "Pokemon Go", a remake by Tencent specify for China market. However, it is clear that they cannot the same “heat” of the original version.
It is interesting that aside from gaining attention of game developers, the impact of Pokemon Go has also spread to the video making field. Some enthusiastic fans has created a PMGO “Harry-potter” version called "Harry Potter Go" with similar features.
There are also AR-based games that have won a lot of market attention, such as "Maguss Wand", "Father.io" or "Night Terrors."
VR or AR, what we need right now is time for these technology to grow and completed. But it is not the time that we miss but the budget to develop the technologies. The cost to research, test, and put the tech in practice t is a bit overwhelming at the moment, creating a barrier for these technologies.
